BARBARA ACHESON moved to Bowen Island, B.C. from Toronto, Canada in 1994. She paints using her Swahili name "BIBI".
While living in Africa from 1965-71, she started her batiks on cotton and silk using the resist technique. The wax is free hand painted onto the fabric. Each unique batik received numerous colour dyeings and subsequent combinations of beeswax and paraffin wax applications.
From this she progressed to non-objective and abstract works in acrylics.
She is inspired by the natural environment and the serenity and beauty of island living. She paints in her studios on Bowen Island and in Maui, Hawaii. Her passion for the ocean, scuba diving, traveling and her experiences in Africa have influenced her drawings and techniques. She brings a festival of colour to her art.
She presently has her art on display in Toronto, Palm Springs, Maui and Vancouver. Her batiks and paintings have found homes in private collections, shops, and galleries around the world.
